DON update: harvesting, insurance, new market approaches

An update from Grain Farmers of Ontario

October 31, 2018
It’s clear that DON in corn is a significant issue for some of our farmer-members this year. Grain Farmers of Ontario is working with Agricorp and other industry organizations to give our farmer-members the best, most up-to-date advice and to seek new opportunities for corn.

What should you be doing?
1) Contact Agricorp at 1-888-247-4999 directly to start the process of assessment – even if you do not have a current issue. This process will take time and it is better to act early.
2) Read Agricorp’s information sheet on DON coverage and process for claims here.
3) Read OMAFRA’s sampling guidelines here.
4) Read OMAFRA’s harvesting tips here.
5) Refer to OMAFRA’s overview of labs offering mycotoxin analysis here.
6) Read OMAFRA’s storage tips for mouldy corn here.
7) Read OMAFRA’s end uses for mouldy corn here.

What is Grain Farmers of Ontario doing?
Grain Farmers of Ontario is working with value chain organizations to find new markets for higher DON corn and will continue to work for our farmer-members to mitigate losses.

We briefed the Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs on the situation and are holding continued meetings with Agricorp to ensure our members have the most up-to-date information available to them.

Additionally, we co-hosted a DON corn discussion this week with more than 40 people across the agriculture industry. We’re looking for proactive solutions and we want to ensure that all parts of the value chain have good, accurate information to work from.

We continue to take this issue very seriously and we are pushing the government and the industry to support our farmer-members as we work to understand more about the realities for this year’s corn harvest and how it is impacting people.

Thank you,

Barry Senft
CEO, Grain Farmers of Ontario
